Kashmiri silverware is one of the ancient arts in Kashmir. The design on the object is known as ‘naqash’ which vary from simple to intricate. The Silver artistry in Kashmir dates back to the Mughal Era. Craftsmen can often be seen in old city, engraving objects of household utility- bowls, frames, plates, samovars, flower vases, tea-sets, scent chests, ornamental picture-frames, cigarette-cases, tumblers, Jugs and trays.

Description: This water jug is an excellent example of Kashmiri silverwork manufactured for the European market. It is chased all over with typically Kashmiri motifs. The body is decorated with pairs of birds amid flowers and foliage within oval cartouches bordered by the bodies of snakes. The bulbous base is decorated with a dozen flower-filled lunettes. The spout is similarly chased with floral designs. The handle is cast in the shape of a serpent disgorging a snake from its mouth. The jug does not have a lid; it is unlikely that it ever had one in keeping with European water jugs at the time which generally did not have a lid.

Description: This bowl has been made from engraved, silver and is in the form of a boat-shaped kashkul. Kashkuls were used by Islamic Sufi mendicants or dervishes as begging bowls to accept alms that were offered to them. The bowl stands on a splayed foot. It is engraved all over with the Kashmiri shawl pattern, infilled with the local coriander flower pattern.

Description: An ornament worn on the head by the woman in this picture is commonly known as Tika and Jiggni. This head ornament comes in triangle or circular shape, usually worn during wedding times. This type of jewellery is usually made up of precious metals of silver.
