Name: Awatipur Ruins
Description: Located on the Srinagar-Pahalgam Highway, Awantipora was named after the Kashmiri king Avantivarman (855-833 AD) and has the ruins of two 9th century Hindu temples built by him. The temples were discovered in the 18th century by Britishers during excavations. The ruins have many stories that could be seen on the pillars inscriptions and many sculptures that have survived the destruction by dynasties and the environment. There are many carvings on the pillars representing demigods and mythical creatures.
